UV Printing on 3D Objects
To provide a total solution for printing on 3D objects, MTPC Printshop has rolled out UV printing for university users. It is a type of digital printing utilizing ultraviolet (UV) light to dry or cure ink. The printing technique can be applied very creatively on a wide range of objects with different materials, sizes and shapes. It can be used for printing signage and display stands; awards and trophies, including those made of glass and acrylic; packaging prototypes and display mock-ups; as well as university gifts and promotional products. Visit the MTPC Printshop to see actual print samples hands-on and explore what UV printing can do for your innovative projects and creative ideas. See Video
Laser Cutting and Engraving
The digital die-cutting service has become a popular service for making signs, labels and packages. Now, the MTPC Printshop is once again introducing laser cutting and engraving services to provide comprehensive print-finishing support to the university. Laser cutting or engraving offers high levels of precision, edge quality and positional accuracy. It cuts or engraves on a wide range of materials and supports sophisticated designs. The services are ideal for small-quantity papercraft projects, customized products like medal and trophy, as well as gifts and souvenirs for guests and donors.
HKUST Virtual Studio Service
MTPC will be piloting a virtual studio service for producing web video programs. A virtual studio is a type of television studio featuring a background that can be manipulated in real time. It enables interaction of people or objects with computer-generated 3D spaces, which can be a pre-built digital template or custom-built HKUST virtual scene. Unlike chromakey technology, virtual studio sets can be shot in multiple angles using cameras from different points of view. It also supports picture-in-picture and various video effects. Virtual studio programs don’t require much post-production, and they are also much faster and cheaper to set up than a physical studio setup. Please contact MTPC’s media production team to try this service for your programs.
DIY Film and Photo Scanning
To address the requests for digitizing positive/negative film and photo prints into electronic files for easy storage and viewing, MTPC has set up self-service film/photo scanning services to let users scan their film or photo prints into digital files. The scanner is located at Editing Suite D of the Creative Media Zone in Learning Commons. Various film sizes (e.g., 35mm, 6cm x 7cm, 4”x5”) and photo sizes (up to 8R) are supported. Users are welcome to book a time slot and turn old images stored in legacy film and print into accessible digital file formats.
